Health screening in Shanghai: where international visitors go

All four hospitals described here are large public tier-3A teaching hospitals. We coordinate access to their checkup or health-management departments. Medical fees are paid directly by you to the hospital; we do not collect or pass on hospital fees.

Why a hospital checkup rather than a clinic

A standalone clinic can run blood panels and basic imaging, but if a finding warrants follow-up — a cardiology referral, a gastroenterology scope, an oncology opinion — you are starting the referral process from scratch. At a 3A hospital, the checkup department sits inside the same institution as the specialists. A same-day or next-day referral stays within one medical record system, one set of imaging files, and one billing relationship.

The international and special-needs departments at these hospitals also handle the logistical friction that makes a public hospital visit difficult for a non-Chinese speaker: appointment booking in English, results interpretation, and coordination with your insurer. That is the gap we help fill on top.

Verified departments

Huadong Hospital — Special-needs Department (特需医疗部)

The Special-needs Department at Huadong Hospital (Fudan University) offers English and Japanese service alongside Mandarin and Shanghainese. Its stated service scope covers health check-up packages, outpatient, inpatient, emergency, vaccination, and home visits. Specialty coverage spans more than 40 departments including cardiology, gastroenterology, respiratory medicine, general surgery, urology, thoracic surgery, orthopaedics, gynaecology, neurology, and oncology. The inpatient wing has 66 rooms with hotel-style service. The department accepts cash, domestic and foreign credit cards, and insurance direct billing.

Shanghai General Hospital — International Medical Care Center (IMCC)

The International Medical Care Center (IMCC) was established in 1993 (with a predecessor foreign-visitor clinic dating to 1956) and supports English, Japanese, and Russian. The IMCC provides 24-hour emergency and outpatient service, inpatient care, VIP check-up packages (including immigration medical exams), home visits, and telemedicine. It holds direct-billing agreements with 40 insurers. A separate English website is available; the IMCC can be reached at imcc@shgh.cn.

Renji Hospital — Health Management Center

The international medical department at Renji Hospital (SJTU School of Medicine), opened in 2015, sees approximately 10,000 international and HK/Macau/Taiwan patients per year from more than 40 countries. In 2018 it became the first public hospital in China to receive DNV GL international medical accreditation (current certification status not independently re-verified).

The Health Management Center operates across the East, West, and South campuses, covering approximately 6,000 square metres. Services include standard check-up packages, precision screening, cancer early detection, and PET-CT/PET-MRI imaging. The centre handles more than 130,000 annual checkup visits and has been designated a nationally recognised health management demonstration base. The international department holds direct-billing agreements with 32 insurers including Cigna, AXA, AIA, Allianz, and MSH.

Longhua Hospital — Checkup Center and Preventive Care (治未病)

A JCI-accredited academic medical center founded in 1960 and one of China’s four earliest TCM clinical bases, Longhua Hospital (Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine) operates a health checkup center and a 治未病 (preventive care) department — listed in the hospital website’s own navigation — that takes a TCM-led approach to health management, covering seasonal therapies and lifestyle medicine. All 48 clinical departments are TCM-led, spanning oncology, bone degeneration, nephrology, rheumatology, and more.

Note: We did not find a dedicated international clinic or foreign-patient English appointment channel on the hospital website. We are confirming by phone whether coordinated visits with English support are available, and will update this page before recommending Longhua to patients who need English-language support throughout.

What a screening visit looks like

Most checkup packages follow the same broad pattern regardless of hospital.

Before you arrive: we confirm your package, arrange the appointment through the international or special-needs department, and tell you what to bring (passport, insurance card, prior reports if relevant). Most full packages require fasting from midnight the night before.

On the day: check-in is at the international department reception, not the main outpatient queue. A half-day package typically moves through blood draw, imaging (chest X-ray, ultrasound, ECG), and any specialist stations back-to-back. You wait for results in the department rather than returning later.

After you leave: some results — pathology, certain imaging reads — take several working days. We help you receive the report, get a plain-English summary of the findings, and route any follow-up questions to the right specialist if something needs attention.

Package prices are not published consistently by any of these hospitals, and vary by package tier, campus, and what imaging is included. We collect quotes by phone and email for each specific request and pass them on at the hospital’s own price, without markup. Ask us for a current quote once you have a shortlist.
