The hospitals in this guide are public tier-3A teaching hospitals. We coordinate access to their stomatology or oral & maxillofacial pathways. Medical fees are paid directly by you to the hospital; we do not collect or pass on hospital fees, and we do not take referral commissions.

Hospital dental departments vs private clinics

Shanghai has many private dental clinics that market heavily to expatriates and international visitors. Those clinics can be convenient — English reception, online booking, central locations — but they operate independently of any hospital. If a finding during treatment warrants specialist investigation (oral surgery, maxillofacial imaging, oncology referral), you start a separate process at a separate institution.

A stomatology or oral & maxillofacial department inside a tier-3A teaching hospital sits under the same roof as radiology, anaesthesia, and related surgical teams. Imaging is shared, records are shared, and internal referrals stay inside one system.

Verified: Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital (九院)

Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital (上海交通大学医学院附属第九人民医院) is a government-run tier-3A general hospital affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. Its predecessor, Bethel Hospital, dates to 1920; the modern affiliation path is documented on the SJTU School of Medicine hospital profile (accessed 2026-07-21). The hospital’s public domain is 9hospital.com.cn (homepage reachable 2026-07-21).

Why it matters for dental visitors. The same official profile states that Ninth People’s hosts a National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases, national key disciplines in oral clinical medicine, and national clinical key specialties including oral & maxillofacial surgery, endodontics, periodontology, prosthodontics, orthodontics, and oral mucosa. Dental sub-specialties listed include paediatric dentistry, preventive dentistry, implantology, and general dentistry. The hospital reports 506 comprehensive dental chairs and dual main campuses (southern campus 639 Zhizaoju Road, Huangpu; northern campus 280 Mohe Road), plus additional oral outpatient sites named in the profile (SHSMU profile, 2026-07-21).

Reputation figure (with year). The SHSMU profile cites the 2018 Fudan University Hospital Management Institute Chinese hospital reputation ranking: stomatology (口腔医学) third nationally that year, and plastic & reconstructive surgery first nationally. Rankings change; we cite the 2018 figure only as published on that page, not as a permanent title.

International academic links ≠ confirmed English front desk. The profile lists international training-centre roles (including IAOMS and AOCMF designations) and sister relationships with overseas dental schools such as Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Those are academic and training facts. As of 2026-07-21 we have not verified a published international-patient desk with phone, language roster, or insurer direct-billing list for foreign dental visitors. Verified: Xinhua Hospital stomatology

Xinhua Hospital (新华医院) is a tier-3A teaching hospital affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, founded in 1958. It operates two campuses (Yangpu and Fengxian).

Stomatology department: 口腔科 (Stomatology) is confirmed in the hospital’s official department directory (accessed July 2026).

International unit: Xinhua operates the Xinhua Jinglang International Medical Department (新华镜朗国际医疗部), which received Shanghai’s public-hospital medical-tourism pilot unit designation in September 2024. The department describes a one-stop model covering visa support, billing, and multilingual service for cross-border patients. Patient nationalities mentioned on that hospital page include Russia, India, Malaysia, Spain, the United States, France, and Australia.

What is not yet confirmed: The Jinglang department’s direct contact number, email, and the full list of languages supported were not published on the hospital website at the time of research. We do not claim one hospital is “better” for every case. Choice depends on diagnosis, imaging already done, and whether English coordination through a dedicated international unit is non-negotiable for you.

Planning a dental trip

Dental visits in a hospital setting follow a predictable sequence. The notes below are general — we tailor the plan once you have a diagnosis or recent records.

Before you arrive: share any recent X-rays, CBCT scans, or letters from your home dentist. Translated summaries help the department prepare and may avoid repeating diagnostic imaging. We handle the translation and send it ahead with your appointment request.

First visit — consultation and imaging: the attending dentist reviews your history, does a clinical examination, and orders any imaging not already available. Hospital-grade panoramic X-ray and CBCT are typically available in large stomatology centres. Simple work (scaling, a straightforward filling) may be completed in the same session if the dentist is satisfied; more complex treatment is usually scheduled once imaging is reviewed.

Staged treatment: implants, bridges, and certain prosthetics involve multiple clinical stages with healing time in between. Two visits separated by weeks to months is normal. We help you align the treatment calendar with your travel plans before you commit to flights — some combinations can be front-loaded on a first trip; others cannot.

After you return home: we obtain a treatment summary from the department and share it with your home dentist, translated into English. If a follow-up arises after you leave — unexpected sensitivity, a question about aftercare — we route it back to the treating clinician.

Prices

Public hospitals in Shanghai do not publish stable English price lists for international dental packages that we can responsibly copy here. Fees vary by procedure, materials (e.g. implant system), surgeon grade, campus, and whether any international-unit surcharge applies.

What we do instead:

1. Collect your diagnosis or treatment plan (and imaging if any).
2. Request a written estimate from the relevant hospital department for those items.
3. Pass the hospital’s own figure to you without markup, with the date of the quote.

Coordination fees for our work are separate and transparent on the services page. We never invent “average implant prices” for Shanghai without a dated primary source.
