Maternity & women's health in Shanghai for international patients

Shanghai has two dedicated maternity specialist hospitals with services directed at international patients. Below is what the dossiers have verified, what remains unconfirmed, and what we check before making any introduction. Medical fees are paid directly by you to the hospital; we do not collect or pass on hospital fees.

IPMCH (International Peace Maternity & Child Health Hospital)

IPMCH — full name International Peace Maternity & Child Health Hospital of China Welfare Institute — is a Tier-3A specialist Ob-Gyn hospital affiliated with the China Welfare Institute and Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. It maintains a complete English website covering its services and VIP department and contact details.

IPMCH was designated a “baby-friendly hospital” by the Ministry of Health, WHO, and UNICEF in 1992 and holds an IVF-ET centre approved by the Ministry of Health in November 2002. The hospital maintains collaborative projects with the University of Hong Kong–Queen Mary Hospital, Monash Institute of Reproduction and Development in Australia, Ohio State University Medical Center, and Tokyo Women’s Medical University Hospital.

VIP department

The VIP Unit is located on floors 13, 14, and 15 of the hospital. Floor 13 (V1) is the outpatient area; floors 14 and 15 (V2 and V3) are the inpatient area.

The VIP outpatient centre provides a full range of obstetrical and gynaecological services, including well-women check-ups, prenatal check-ups, mammary check-ups, and a series of outpatient OB/GYN procedures. For inpatient stays, each private room in the VIP centre is designed to comfortably accommodate you and your support person.

What is not yet confirmed

The practical extent of English-language support per visit — whether specific clinicians in the VIP unit speak English — requires phone or in-person verification and is something we confirm for you before any introduction. The medical inquiry line is +86-21-64070434*8; a VIP-dedicated phone line is not publicly listed. IPMCH has two campuses: Xuhui (910 Hengshan Road) and Fengxian (168 Wanghe Road); whether the VIP unit operates at both sites is unverified.

First Maternity & Infant Hospital

Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Hospital (上海市第一妇婴保健院) is a Tier-3A specialist hospital founded in 1947. It became a Tongji University affiliated hospital in 2006 and received a second formal designation as Tongji University Affiliated Maternity and Obstetrics Hospital in 2023. The hospital operates two campuses: East campus at 2699 Gaoke West Road, Pudong, and West campus at 536 Changle Road, Jing’an.

International Medical Department

The hospital’s outpatient navigation lists an International Medical Department (国际医疗部) and the hospital maintains an English-language section of its website. Beyond confirming the department’s existence in the navigation structure, the dossier research could not load the department’s subpage to verify its scope, the languages supported, or the services offered. We state this honestly: the International Medical Department is confirmed to exist; its practical scope for foreign patients is unverified and is one of the things we confirm by phone before making an introduction.

Note: a media report (Tencent News, 2024) cited First Maternity among hospitals included in a Shanghai government medical-tourism pilot initiative; that report is a media source only and we have not been able to verify the official government document, so we do not represent the pilot status as confirmed fact.

Planned maternity visits we coordinate

The types of appointment-based care below represent what international patients most commonly ask us to arrange. These descriptions are advisory only — they are not clinical recommendations and we do not advise on diagnosis or treatment.

Prenatal check-up scheduling. Many international families in Shanghai want to follow a structured prenatal schedule with a specialist hospital rather than a general clinic. We identify the appropriate department at either hospital, confirm the booking channel for foreign-passport holders, and handle initial contact in Chinese where needed.

Hospital communication and document preparation. Records from a previous provider abroad — ultrasound reports, blood results, a summary from a home-country obstetrician — need to be translated and presented in a format the hospital can act on. We manage that translation and handover before the first appointment.

Birth planning enquiries. For families planning a delivery in Shanghai, the specific requirements — documentation, deposit timing, delivery suite options — vary by hospital and change periodically. We request the current information from the hospital for your situation rather than relying on outdated sources.

Interpretation during visits. Even at hospitals with English-capable staff, medical consultations in a second language are tiring and easy to misunderstand. We can arrange an accompanying interpreter for visits where the patient prefers it.

Post-partum and gynaecological follow-up. International patients who have delivered in Shanghai or who want a gynaecological specialist opinion can be introduced to the appropriate clinic. We confirm the right department and appointment type before making any introduction.

Package prices for prenatal programmes and delivery at both hospitals are not published online as fixed English lists we can safely copy. We obtain quotes by direct enquiry for your planned package and list confirmed figures here only when we have a source and date.
