TCM wellness in Shanghai: hospital-based, not tourist-trap

The hospitals covered here are accredited public tier-3A institutions in Shanghai. We coordinate access to their TCM departments. Medical fees are paid directly by you to the hospital; we do not collect or pass on hospital fees. We make no claims about treatment outcomes — TCM appointments coordinated through this service are wellness appointments, not diagnostic or therapeutic consultations in a medical sense.

Why hospital-based TCM

Shanghai has hundreds of storefronts offering massage, acupuncture, and herbal consultations. Many operate lawfully and comfortably. What they do not offer is hospital-grade accountability: a treating practitioner whose credentials are verified by a public institution, access to on-site diagnostics if something unexpected arises, and a medical record that follows you if you need further care.

A TCM department inside a tier-3A public teaching hospital sits within a structure that includes laboratory testing, radiology, and specialist departments. The practitioners hold regulated clinical qualifications. Pricing is set by the hospital, not by a front-of-house negotiation.

This is not to say hospital TCM is always the right fit — the environment is clinical rather than relaxing, and booking requires more planning than walking into a spa. We help with that planning. We do not claim that hospital-based TCM produces better health outcomes than other approaches; we only note what the institutional setting provides.

Longhua Hospital

Longhua Hospital Shanghai (龙华医院) is a tier-3A TCM hospital — the highest public-hospital designation — affiliated with Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It was founded in July 1960 and is one of the four earliest TCM clinical centers established in China. The hospital has been accredited as an academic medical center by Joint Commission International (JCI).

The hospital operates two campuses (main campus at 725 Wanping South Road, Xuhui District; a second campus in Pudong) with 1,750 beds in total. Annual outpatient and emergency visits exceed 4.15 million. All 48 clinical departments are TCM-led, covering oncology, bone-degenerative disease, nephrology, rheumatology, spleen-stomach disease, lung disease, breast disease, and others.

Preventive-care (治未病) department: The hospital’s navigation lists a 中医预防保健科 (TCM preventive health department). The SHUTCM introduction for Longhua describes services including seasonal acupoint-patch therapy (三伏三九贴敷) and winter tonic consultations. The department’s dedicated page was not accessible at the time of research; specific services and availability for international visitors are being confirmed by phone.

Health Screening Center: The hospital maintains a 体检中心 (health screening center) listed in the hospital’s medical services. Package details and whether full English-language reports are available were not published online; we confirm these by phone for each enquiry.

International clinic: not yet confirmed. The hospital’s English-language website at longhua.net/ywwz.htm provides a general hospital introduction but does not describe a dedicated international or foreigner clinic. No such unit was found on the website at the time of research. We are confirming by phone whether an English-supported booking channel exists. We will not coordinate Longhua appointments until that is confirmed.

TCM within general hospitals

Shanghai’s major tier-3A teaching hospitals are not TCM-specialist institutions, but several operate TCM departments alongside the full range of hospital specialties. Two hospitals on this site have confirmed TCM departments.

Xinhua Hospital

Xinhua Hospital (新华医院) is a tier-3A teaching hospital affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, founded in 1958. It operates two campuses (Yangpu and Fengxian).

中医科 (TCM department) is confirmed in the hospital’s official department directory, accessed July 2026.

International access: Xinhua operates the Xinhua Jinglang International Medical Department (新华镜朗国际医疗部), which received Shanghai’s public-hospital medical-tourism pilot unit designation in September 2024. The department offers a one-stop model covering visa support, billing, and multilingual service for cross-border patients. Patient nationalities on record include Russia, India, Malaysia, Spain, the United States, France, and Australia.

What is not yet confirmed: the Jinglang department’s direct contact details and the full list of languages supported were not published on the hospital website at the time of research. We confirm these for each enquiry before making an introduction.

Renji Hospital

Renji Hospital (仁济医院) is a tier-3A comprehensive hospital affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. Founded in 1844, it was the first Western-medicine hospital in Shanghai after the city opened to trade. The hospital operates four campuses (East, West, South, and North) with 2,750 beds and 54 clinical departments.

中医科 (TCM department) is present at Renji; the hospital’s nephrology department holds a national designation as a TCM–Western medicine collaborative “flagship” department under the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

International access: Renji’s International Medical Department (国际医疗部) was established in October 2015 and received DNV GL international accreditation in 2018 — the first public hospital in China to achieve this standard (current certification status not independently re-verified). The department records approximately 40,000 outpatient visits per year, of which around 10,000 are foreign and Hong Kong/Macao/Taiwan patients from more than 40 countries. Thirty-two insurance companies have direct-billing arrangements with the department, including Cigna, AXA, AIA, Allianz, and MSH.

What a wellness visit involves

The notes below describe a typical sequence for a hospital-based TCM wellness appointment. This is general coordination information — not medical advice. Specific services depend on the department and the practitioner you see.

Before you arrive: tell us what you are interested in — whether that is a general health assessment, a specific practice such as acupuncture or tuina, or a preventive-care consultation. We pass that to the department when requesting an appointment so you are directed to the right practitioner.

Initial consultation: the TCM practitioner takes a history and performs a traditional assessment that typically includes tongue inspection and pulse palpation. This informs which services, if any, are appropriate for that session. We make no claims about what that assessment will or will not find.

Scheduled sessions: tuina (therapeutic massage) and acupuncture are typically scheduled as a course of appointments rather than a single visit. If you are planning a short trip, we discuss realistic scheduling with the hospital before you arrive so expectations are aligned.

After your visit: we can request a summary from the department and provide a translated record for your home practitioner. If a question arises after you return, we route it back to the treating clinician.

Prices

TCM department fees vary by service, practitioner grade, and whether the visit goes through an international unit. Public hospitals do not publish a single English price card we can reuse here. We request a written estimate from the hospital for your intended services and pass it on at the hospital’s own price, without markup.
