How to book an English health check-up in Shanghai

A full health screening is one of the most common reasons international visitors ask about planned care in Shanghai. This article explains where people book, what published prices look like, and how booking works if you need English support — without inventing hospital fees or promising medical outcomes.

Two realistic paths

English-friendly screening in Shanghai generally falls into two buckets. Choose based on language comfort, budget, and whether you want easy specialist follow-up inside the same institution.

1. Public tier-3A hospitals (checkup / health-management centres)

Large teaching hospitals run dedicated health-management or checkup floors. Strength: if something needs follow-up, you are already inside a major hospital system.

Verified examples (not a complete list):

• Renji Hospital — Health Management Center — Operates across East, West, and South campuses (~6,000 m²). Offers standard packages, precision screening, cancer early-detection options, and advanced imaging such as PET-CT / PET-MRI. Official page: renji.com health management centre (accessed 2026-07-21). • Ruijin Hospital — Health Screening Centre + International Medical Department — Checkup centre on the 8th floor of the new outpatient building at 197 Ruijin Er Road (~1,800 m²), with published package menus (Ruijin checkup centre). Caveat: Public-hospital package list prices are often not fully published in English, and Chinese menu prices go out of date. Treat any online figure as a lead; we reconfirm by phone or email for your dates.

2. International private hospitals and clinics

These are the default for many expats who want English front-desk, English reports, and smoother self-booking. SmartShanghai’s English-language survey of Shanghai check-ups lists indicative package bands such as:

The same guide notes public-hospital options such as Huashan packages roughly ¥1,950–13,600 and basic visa/work-check packages at some private local hospitals from a few hundred RMB — useful context, not a recommendation of any single package.

What it costs (indicative, sourced)

Packages are not interchangeable. A ¥2,500 clinic “essential” set (bloods, ECG, chest X-ray) is not the same product as a US academic executive physical with multi-day specialist consults. Use the table only as orientation.

How to read this honestly

• Ruijin’s Package A and Package B pages list itemised item prices that sum to ¥994 and ¥2,004. Those menus are labelled 2017. They prove public hospitals publish structured packages, not that 2017 RMB figures are still charged in 2026.
• PartnerMD’s September 2025 overview places most US executive physicals in the $2,000–6,000 band, with examples such as PartnerMD $2,700–4,000, Emory $3,000–5,000+, and Mayo historically around $5,000 (citing a 2017 estimate). Mayo’s own programme states cost varies by age, campus, and add-ons.
• Elite imaging packages (MRI, multi-region CT, endoscopy under sedation) in Shanghai can exceed the mid-range figures above — SmartShanghai lists some private premium packages into the ¥12,000–15,000+ range.

What a typical package includes

Across public and private providers, a “comprehensive” day usually covers some mix of:

1. Clinical exam — height, weight, blood pressure, general physician review
2. Labs — blood count, liver/kidney panels, lipids, glucose / HbA1c, urinalysis; sometimes thyroid or tumour markers
3. Cardiac — ECG; higher tiers may add echocardiography
4. Imaging — chest X-ray or low-dose CT; abdominal / thyroid / pelvic ultrasound
5. Gender-specific items — e.g. PSA, pelvic ultrasound, Pap / HPV, breast imaging (age-dependent)

Add-ons (endoscopy, MRI, PET) are usually optional and drive price more than the base physical. Ask for the item list in writing before you pay.

How the booking works

Booking an English health check-up in Shanghai

1. 1

   Share dates, goals, and constraints

   Tell us your travel window, age band, prior conditions, whether you need English reports, and any insurer requirements. That decides public-hospital vs international-clinic path and package depth.

2. 2

   Shortlist and confirm a real slot

   We contact the international / special-needs desk or private clinic, confirm package contents, fasting rules, report language, turnaround, and the current price. Public hospitals often need passport details and advance booking; Ruijin publishes dedicated international checkup lines for this.

3. 3

   Attend on the day (fasting, ID, accompaniment)

   Bring passport (and insurance card if direct-billing applies). Most full packages require fasting from midnight. At public hospitals we meet you at the international or checkup reception — not the main outpatient queue — and stay through the stations if you want accompaniment.

4. 4

   Receive results and a plain-English walkthrough

   Some labs and imaging reads take several working days. We help you obtain the report, understand abnormal flags in plain English, and — if needed — book a follow-up specialist visit at the same hospital. We do not interpret results as a medical second opinion.

Practical details that trip people up

Fasting. Blood glucose and abdominal ultrasound almost always need overnight fasting. Schedule screening for the morning; plan a late breakfast nearby after the blood draw.

Chinese phone / WeChat. Public hospitals lean on WeChat official accounts and SMS. International clinics accept email or WhatsApp more readily. If you do not have a China number, say so early.

Insurance. Some international departments and private clinics offer direct billing with named insurers (Renji’s international department, for example, publicly discusses multi-insurer direct billing). Coverage for “executive physical / annual check-up” is plan-specific — confirm with your insurer before assuming the bill is covered.

Visa / employment medicals. A work-permit or residence medical is a different product from a comprehensive executive screening. Basic employment packages can be a few hundred RMB at some private local hospitals (SmartShanghai guide); do not confuse them with multi-thousand-RMB full-body packages.

Follow-up. The main reason many visitors still choose a 3A hospital checkup is same-campus specialist access if a finding needs a scope, cardiology review, or oncology opinion. That advantage only matters if the checkup department can route you — something we verify when we book.

Sample timeline

A common pattern for visitors is a 3-day trip: arrive and settle (start fasting that night) → screening morning → free afternoon → results briefing once available (sometimes after departure, remotely). See our 3-day health screening sample plan.

• English-friendly screening is real in Shanghai — via international clinics or public-hospital international / special-needs channels.
• Published mid-range international-clinic packages often sit around ¥2,500–6,500; public menus exist but must be reconfirmed; US executive physicals commonly land around $2,000–6,000.
• Language of the report, fasting rules, and exact inclusions matter more than the headline price.
