International Medical Department
Zhongshan Hospital (中山医院), founded in 1937, is one of the earliest large comprehensive hospitals founded and managed by Chinese physicians. It is a Grade 3A comprehensive teaching hospital affiliated with Fudan University and a public institution under the National Health Commission (Fudan graduate admissions page, 2026-07-07).
The International Medical Department was established in June 2020. According to an authoritative media report citing the hospital’s own official materials, the department operates 14 consultation rooms in outpatient, 5 wards with 70 single-occupancy rooms (covering surgery, general medicine, and comprehensive international-patient wards), and includes a dedicated waiting area for large-equipment examinations (CT, MRI, etc.). The department provides multi-language medical services, including AI-assisted translation for less common languages, and supports direct billing with premium commercial insurance. More than 300 specialists hold appointments in the International Medical Department (zhuyitai.com, citing hospital official materials, 2026-07-07).
In 2023, Zhongshan Hospital was designated one of Shanghai’s first batch of 13 “International Medical Tourism Pilot Units” by the municipal government (Tencent News, 2026-07-07).
