International Medical Department

Renji Hospital (仁济医院), founded in 1844 as the first Western-medicine hospital after Shanghai opened to trade, is a Grade 3A comprehensive hospital affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTU medical school page, 2026-07-07). The hospital operates across four campuses (East, West, South, North) with 2,750 beds and 54 clinical departments (hospital introduction, 2026-07-07).

The International Medical Department was established in October 2015. According to the department’s own official article, it received DNV GL international medical accreditation in 2018, described as “the first public hospital in China to achieve international-standard certification under the DNV framework” — note that current certification status has not been independently re-verified against the DNV GL registry (department article, 2026-07-07). The department serves approximately 10,000 foreign and Hong Kong/Macao/Taiwan patients per year out of a total outpatient volume of roughly 40,000, drawn from more than 40 countries (source, 2026-07-07). The official page states “multi-language support” without listing specific languages; patients from the United States, United Kingdom, France, Japan and other countries are mentioned in the source text.

Specialties Relevant to International Patients

Ophthalmology: The ophthalmology department offers full-femtosecond laser corneal surgery, phacoemulsification cataract surgery, and vitreoretinal procedures, with specialist clinics for fundus disease, cataracts, refractive errors, corneal disease, and glaucoma (ophthalmology department page, 2026-07-07).
